An awesome start to the month with a 100km ride around the Isle of Wight. Terrible weather the day before gave way to a gorgeous crisp autumn morning. Joined by around 40 other riders it was a great day out.
In October I also discovered the Dr Maffetone 180 formula which has transformed my training. In a nutshell, but subtracting your age from 180 you should train with your heart rate monitor hovering around number; increase by 5 if you train regularly. I’m 41 and train regularly so my number is 142-144. My blog post on this is here.
Having not come from an endurance sport background I’ve made more than my fair share of errors in training, more often than not related to intensity. But, I can now train more often and for longer which is exactly what will make the difference in 2016.
The aim for November is to try to maintain my overall mileage whilst transitioning away from the bike and to the pool. I know I’m terrible with my turbo trainer so to at least get two sessions under my belt…I’ve only done one so far but there are six days left of the month! How do motivate yourself to get on the turbo trainer?
Lastly, I’ve also pretty much finalised my race calendar for 2016. If like me you lead a busy life I find it takes a huge weight of my mind if I know the plan is integrated with what is already in the plan. It also helps with the motivation to get out training!
So, that’s it for October, I will be posting November tomorrow. Please do ping me a message of your highlights for last month, or your goals for this one? I’ve also launched a poll on what is it your are training to improve over this off season – please vote!? Mine target is the run and this week I’ll be posting on the blog some drills aimed to improve both your endurance and strength.
