Tomorrow it is time for ‘The Tour of the Falling Leaves’…
I havent done it before but apparently the annual ride around the Isle of Wight is truly epic and one not to be missed. Here is the GPX (it is 100km. not the 200km stated!?) Ferry over from Southampton at 8am and then a day of riding with around 30 others – should be social and fun. I’ve only ever biked a handful of 100km rides before so I thought it’d be interesting to go through my checklist and prep.
- Lubricate all moving parts (chain, pedals, gears, brakes, wheel bearings)
- Check all bolts, locking mechanisms tight (seat, seat post, handle bars, aero bars, brake blocks, wheels)
This one is heavily dependent on the weather, time of day, distance etc but it’s an early start and the weather is fine for tomorrow.
- Short sleeve top
- UVA/polarised sunglasses
- warm socks
- fingerless gloves (I ditched the full gloves!)
- shell top
We’ve got a couple of stops planned but I’m expecting to find a few keen folk who want to kick on and complete the ride without stopping; that’s who I’ll be riding with. So with that in mind I need enough to complete the ride minus, perhaps, a comfort break or two.
- Spare inner tube and scabs (puncture repair)
- 2x Ultimate Flapjacks
- 1400ml water in two bottles (1.5 Zero tabs in each)
- 2x isotonic gels
- 1x caffeine shot
- Fully charged phone
The only other thing not in the pic is money, a credit card and a bit of change. Ohh, and a peanut butter sandwich and a bottle of Lucozade which I’ll leave in the car for the drive home!
I’ve been hydrating like crazy yesterday and today so I’m well watered before setting out. For breakfast I’ll have three scrambled eggs on toast, a cup of tea and a banana on the drive to the ferry port.
Cant think I’ve missed anything important…?
