I rode out into an open patch of land in the New Forest, hit a tidal wave of wind and thought of Anakin and Obi Wan in Episode III when they got trapped in ray shields! “Patience“
I’m not going to reinvent the wheel (so to speak), as this article from the people at CTP has everything in it for riding in windy conditions.
Points 1, 2 and 3 are the bones I pull out of this article.
Get Low – I’m triathlon training so I’m using my aero bars and practicing staying on them for as long as possible to maintain the most aero position. It’s not the most comfortable but much better having had a pro bike fit which I mentioned in a previous post. I got a couple of stiff cross winds which were real 5p, 10p moments but you’re going for time not comfort right?!
Gear down – simple, straightforward and bang on! There’s a lot to be said in giving yourself a little latitude, and engaging some of the faster twitch muscles for a change.
A set speed – Trying to maintain the same speed when you’ve got varying wind speeds and directions is frustrating and unnecessary. Patience!
Once you’re round the corner, or the wind has died down, you can reap the rewards from that saved energy.
Anyhow, I somehow managed to PB this route so pretty pleased!
